The kohanim stand in rows, bazikhin in hand — large cups to receive the blood: a row all of silver, a row all of gold, never mixed. The full bazikh passes from hand to hand to the altar, and one takes the full one before returning the empty. They had no base: wide at the top, pointed below, they could not be set on the ground, where the blood would have congealed.
