The synagogue attendant takes the Torah scroll and gives it to the head of the synagogue; the head of the synagogue gives it to the segan, the segan to the Kohen Gadol, the Kohen Gadol to the king — to honour him through the multitude. That each receives it in the presence of a greater one is all for the king's honour, says Abaye. The king rises and receives it standing.
