Every seven years, at the close of the shemittah year, all Israel who came up for the festival — men, women and children — are assembled, and passages of the Torah are read to them that urge them to the mitzvot and strengthen their hands in the true faith. The king reads, at the close of the first day of Sukkot, at the start of chol hamoed of the eighth year, in the Ezrat Nashim. Trumpets are sounded throughout Jerusalem to gather the people.
