The Beit HaMoked has no upper storey: it is covered by a vault resting on its walls. Bartenura calls it “arcuolto”, a vault, and the Rambam describes it as a roof “like part of a circle”. This is why, at night, the kohen guards inside and the Levite sleeps outside: elsewhere the kohanim watch above and the Levites below, but here there is no above.
Dimensions
- barrel vault running east–west, over 30 amot
- springing at 28 amot from the floor, rise 6
- solid end walls at both ends, without windows
Sources
Project decisionAdopted: part of a circle, hence a low barrel vault and not a dome (Rambam on Tamid 1:1). Tour's choice: the east–west axis, the springing height, the rise, the thickness and the solid end walls; no source gives them.
