Lishkat HaChotamot

See it in the tour

Here the Hasmoneans hid the altar stones that the Greek kings had defiled by sacrificing on them to idols: they could no longer be used, so they were stored away. Tamid and Shekalim call the same chamber the chamber of the seals. Whoever wanted libations paid Yochanan, the officer over the seals, and received a seal marked “calf”, “ram”, “kid” or “sinner”; he exchanged it for the libations with Achiyah, and in the evening the two accounts were matched.

Dimensions

  • north-east corner, in the 'hol half

Project decisionAdopted: one chamber under two names (Bartenura, Tosafot Yom Tov; Tosafot on Yoma 17a, quoted by Melekhet Shlomo): the Beit HaMoked had only four chambers. Ben Azzai counts five seals, inscribed in Aramaic (Shekalim 5:3); the tour shows four. Tour's choice: the number of stones, the table, the shape of the seals.
