Fires of the Beit HaMoked

מְדוּרַת בֵּית הַמּוֹקֵד

Medurat Beit HaMoked

See it in the tour

The Beit HaMoked, “the house of the hearth”, takes its name from its fire. It burns day and night, to warm the kohanim who walk barefoot on the marble of the Azara. On the eve of Shabbat the fire may still be left to catch there at dusk: the kohanim are diligent, and this fire serves only them. According to R. Chananel it never went out, because from it was taken the “ordinary” fire that must be brought to the altar even when fire comes down from heaven.

Dimensions

  • two stone hearths of 2.5 × 2.5 amot
  • in the middle of the 'hol half of the hall
