The Ezrat Nashim is entered from the east: one comes in through the eastern gate of the Har HaBayit, crosses the Cheil and climbs its twelve steps. Sukkah 5:4 calls this gate “the gate that goes out to the east”. To the west, the Gate of Nikanor opens onto the Ezrat Israel; the gates of the Har HaBayit, the Ezrat Nashim and the Azara, and the entrance of the Heikhal, are aligned.

Project decisionAdopted: the Gate of Nikanor is the eastern gate of the Azara, which the Rambam (Beit HaBechirah 5:5) also calls Sha'ar HaElyon. Middot 2:6, however, lists a Sha'ar HaElyon among the southern gates; Tosfot Yom Tov (Middot 2:6) reports that the Yerushalmi applies the name to the eastern gate, but holds that the one in Middot 2:6 is in the south.
