Rovadim of the Beit HaMoked

רוֹבְדִין שֶׁל אֶבֶן

Rovdin shel even

See it in the tour

Stone tiers run around the hall: the elders of the father's house on duty sleep on them, for one does not bring beds into the Mikdash. They are not steps set against the wall: according to Abaye, the wall was built of stones ten amot and eight amot long, and the two amot that jutted out formed the bench. Stone could not be cut with iron once in the Mikdash, so the projection was prepared at the quarry.

Dimensions

  • two tiers: 2 amot of projection, then 1 amah, each one amah high
  • along the nave, the walls of the chambers and the east wall
  • interrupted at the doorways

Project decisionAdopted: Abaye's reading (Tamid 26b), and two tiers one above the other, narrower at the top (Bartenura). Lechem Shamayim (on Tamid 1:1) wants them on all four sides, from the word “surrounded”. Tour's choice: the height of the tiers, and their course around the chambers.
