The small chamber that bears the name of the great one, and opens onto it. The kohen who became impure during the night goes down here to the ritual bath, through the mesiba, the passage that runs beneath the Mikdash. A fire burns here constantly: if the fire of the great hall goes out, it is rekindled from here, according to the Rosh.

Project decisionAdopted: the chamber of the descent is the “Lishkat Beit HaMoked” of Tamid 3:3 (Rashi, Bartenura). Two readings of the fire where the kohen warms himself after immersing: here, according to the Rosh and Bartenura — the Rambam on Tamid 3:3 puts a fire in one of the four chambers without saying which —, or at the Beit HaTevila, according to the Rambam (Beit HaBechirah 5:11). The tour lights both. Tour's choice: the place of the hearth and of the shaft.
