“With all your offerings you shall offer salt.” The nine kohanim who received the limbs of the tamid carry them to the kevesh, lay them on its lower half, on the west side, and salt them: that is where a heap of salt sits on the ramp. The limbs wait there while the kohanim recite the Shema in the Lishkat HaGazit; they go up onto the fire only after the incense. The tamid tour places a kohen on the ramp, a foreleg in hand, taking the salt and scattering it.
