Magrefa

See it in the tour

When the kohanim reach the space between the Ulam and the Mizbeach, one of them takes the magrefa and throws it to the ground. In Jerusalem no one can hear his neighbour over it, and the crash serves as a signal: the kohanim come to bow down, the Levites to sing, and the head of the ma'amad stands the impure at the eastern gates (Tamid 5:6). It is a large utensil thrown to make a noise (Bartenura); Tosafot Yom Tov and the Rosh give it the shape of an ash shovel. The model lays it on the ground where it falls.

Dimensions

  • on the ground between the Ulam and the Mizbeach, where it is thrown
  • shaped like an ash shovel: a lid of thin metal, with a handle

Project decisionAdopted: a large utensil thrown down to make noise (Bartenura), shaped like an ash shovel (Tosafot Yom Tov, the Rosh). Set aside: the Raavad, cited by the Rashash, for whom it is the ten-holed musical instrument of Arakhin 10b-11a, all of whose voices were released at once. Tour's choice: its diameter, its handle and the bronze.
